REVIEWS & PRODUCT EVALUATION:
NAME / TITLE: Excel Saga (Koshi Rikdo, Japan, 1999)
TYPE OF PRODUCT: DVD video, (NOT VHS).
RECCOMENDATION: BUY IT, BUY THE SPINOFFS, THEN BUY IT AGAIN!
It is rare that this reviewer finds a product, particularly
one appealing to the younger generation, that doesn't make him
want to puke blood. But there are exceptions to the rule of
popular mediocrity and crapness, and this fine anime is just
such an example.
The Japanese Manga Stereotype Young Woman Character
Excel has been recruited into the "Secret ideological
organization of A.C.C.R.O.S.S, and for the first three
episodes is the only member apart from the organisations leader,
Lord Illapalazzo. The organization is dedicated to taking over
the world one step at a time, starting with the city of "F", in
the prefecture (county) of "F". This is fine, but it swiftly
becomes obvious that Lord Illpalazzo is a complete and utter
loonie and Excel is not far behind.
Her first mission is to kill the original creator of Excel Saga,
Koshi Rikdo, who "Doesn't deserve to live in a house with walls"!
He seems to spend his time drawing manga and humming to himself:
"I'm a manga artist, I-am-a-scumm, do dee doo de doo, No-one'll
miss-me if I got-killed..."
Then the city is invaded by Puuchus, fiendishly cute Pokemon-esqe
creature who pack futon beaters and laser guns... the only
person who can kill the evil Puuchus is... Excel herself, because
she "doesn't really care about that stuff". It's true- she
carries around a pet dog as an "emergency food supply", fer fuck's
sake!
Every episode has a theme, beginning with the disclaimer,
"I, Koshi Rikdo, the original creator of Excel Saga, hereby give
my permission for my work to be animated and used in this
episode as a..." [whatever theme it is]- so there's sci-fi episodes, girlies
episodes, survival drama episodes, sports documentary episodes,
etc, etc. I'm told there are 26 episodes, with four episodes per
DVD (except for the first one, which had five), so rush out
and buy buy buy them all! If you can't them in your home
prefecture, send off for them. Go to Japan and get the original
comix! Then go to the US and get the English-language translation!
Lord Illpallazo commands you!!!
